Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards
On Thursday 19th December, His Excellency presented Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards to students from the Grammar School, Elizabeth College and the Ladies' College.
Launched in February 1956, and intially for boys aged between 15 and 18, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award is the world's leading achievement award for young people. The Award was opened to girls in 1958, and in the same year the first Gold Awards were achieved.
Today there are more than 300,000 young people taking part in the programme throughout Britain. Locally, the Scheme is supported by the Friends of DofE, whose contribution ensures that any young islander can complete their Award, regardless of any finanicial barrier.
In order to attain the Gold Award, participants must successfully complete five sections:
- Volunteering;
- Advancing skills gained through a hobby, skill or interest;
- Physical recreation;
- Participation in expeditions; and
- A residential project, requiring them to stay and work away from home on a shared project
