BEM for Roy Bisson

Roy Bisson was awarded his BEM in the New Year's Honours List 2023 for decades of involvement on a variety of community projects, helping to shape the third sector in Guernsey.

Roy has been part of the Guernsey swimarathon organising committee since 1980 and served as chairman of the Worker's Education Committee in Guernsey for eight years from 2010 and then President for three.

He was founder and chairman of the Guernsey Consumer Group from 1964 to 2000, also serving for three years as chairman of the National Consumer Federation whilst also serving as a Member of the States of Guernsey.

More recently Roy has co-founded the Victor Hugo in Guernsey Society and was elected President of La Societe Guernesiaise.

His Excellency hosted the event to bestow the medal on a sunny Saturday lunchtime at Government House. A full reception of family, friends and colleagues listened to a condensed citation of his achievements before Roy did an uncharacteristically short speech that thanked those who have assisted and supported him over the years of service to the community, mentioning especially his two sons and their families and his partner Barbara. It was a joyful occasion, guests spilling out into enjoy the garden as Roy was interviewed by the Press and TV and as he said goodbye to the last guest, His Excellency noted that it had indeed been a very happy and successful event.
