Helen Sharman OBE talk for International Women's Day

As part of International Women’s Day, the Soroptimists invited His Excellency and the Lieutenant-Governor’s Cadets to a talk from Helen Sharman, the first British astronaut in space, alongside students from all Guernsey schools. It was a fascinating talk telling us about how one radio advert looking for astronauts led to her career move from developing Mars bar ice creams to growing spuds on a space station! Some truly inspirational words about taking every opportunity, no matter how crazy it might seem.

Lady Cripwell is patron of the Soroptimists and was gutted to miss this opportunity due to illness but was pleased to have so many young people in the Bailiwick have an opportunity to hear from a woman who really did push the boundaries around the limits we set ourselves, and ultimately broke free of those constraints. An inspiration to young people, not least the many young women who came to hear her talk.
