Medal presentation for the Late Jo Norman BEM
Mrs Johanna Norman has devoted more than 48 years of voluntary service to swimming and water safety in Guernsey, making an exceptional contribution to the community through teaching, coaching and mentoring generations of swimmers. She began volunteering with the Guernsey Swimming Club in the mid-1970s and has served continuously on its committee since 1977. As President from 1994 to 2012, she helped strengthen the club and expand community engagement through numerous events and activities.
A qualified swimming teacher for over 40 years, Jo has taught thousands of children and supported athletes who later competed at Island, Commonwealth and Olympic Games level. She has continually developed her skills, supported competitions, and accompanied swimmers on off-island events. Beyond coaching, she has mentored volunteers and helped organise major community events, including the Polar Bear Swim and charity swims. Now over 80, she remains actively involved, continuing to inspire and support the Guernsey swimming community.
Unfortunately Joanna Norman died earlier this year before she was able to receive her medal. We asked her family if they would still like to hold a ceremony at Government House and they were keen to celebrate her life achievements in the same way. So we have invited family, friends and colleagues and will present the medal to her grandson, Kevin Penney, who accompanied her to the King's Birthday Reception in June.
