Ongoing support for The National Garden Scheme
Lady Cripwell will be holding a reception to thank all those who have supported the Open Garden Scheme over the last four years, either by opening their gardens or volunteering on the day and also to encourage other homeowners to take part.
The National Garden Scheme has a rich and interesting history - with humble beginnings in the early 1900s when they first started supporting district nurses, to donating millions of pounds to nursing and health charities over 90 years later.
The Scheme gives visitors unique access to over 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, and raises impressive amounts of money for nursing and health charities through admissions, teas and cake.
In the Bailiwick, the scheme is still in its infancy with gardens in St Peter Port and Sark opening in its first year in 2022. The charity here is run by local members of the Queen’s Nursing Institute who hope to attract more people willing to open their gardens for charity in the coming years.
Government House has held open gardens in June 2023 and June 2025 with entrance fees and donations going to support the NGS. GROW were able to set up a stall for Plant Sales and the GH staff were on hand to serve tea in china cups and saucers to go with a selection of homemade cakes. There was also musical entertainment and a fairy door trail for the children.
